A Dream Realized: A Family Legacy
Welcome to the story of The Quilted Bee & Bee Hive Sewing Center Story! So many people have asked me why I wanted to open a quilt shop, I thought it was time to put it on paper. I come from a long line of quilters, including my Grandma, most of my aunts and of course my beautiful Mom were all quilters. Once my Mom, now known as Gigi, retired, she was able to spend much more time on her machine and passed on her passion for quilting. Each of her five children received one of her beautiful quilts, which are now treasures for us. When I received mine, I was in awe of how beautiful my quilt was. I just knew I wanted to learn how to sew. As Mom and I spent more time together talking about fabric and quilts, we started bouncing around the idea of opening our own shop. I admit, in the beginning it was just a dream that was fun to talk about. We would talk about what our shop would look like, the fabric we would carry and how much fun we would have together. Each time we talked, the dream grew larger. This version of the dream was not meant to be.
A Life-Changing Diagnosis and Heartbreaking Loss
In July of 2017, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. My husband Randy, along with my Mom, gave me the best care. After surgery and treatment, I found out I was in remission. Life was good again! Shortly after, however, I received a call that my Mom had the deadliest form of brain cancer. After 18 months of fighting that horrible disease, the Good Lord called her home. When she died, I lost all desire to sew; it disappeared completely.
A Journey of Rediscovery and Inspiration
Randy and I have been blessed with three wonderful children. Our youngest daughter married a career Army man and lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado for a time. On our trips out to visit, we would stop at as many quilt shops as we could. Talk about a re-awakening! Not only was my desire to have my own shop reignited, but Randy also fell in love with the idea. Everything we do in that shop, we do to honor my Mom and our shared dream. The shop is my happy place, and I hope that when you visit, Gigi’s memory and love is ever present.
Gratitude for Support
I have had so much support along the way. My biggest supporter is my husband, Randy. My kids are my biggest cheerleaders, ever ready with encouragement! Our dear friend Cyndi helped keep things moving forward early on. Tamy, what a godsend she has been! Mary Kay and Kim both started out as customers and are now part of our team, but more than that, they have become family. Everyone who supported us has played a crucial role in making this dream a reality. Thank you just doesn’t seem sufficient.
Last but certainly not least, you, our customers. Without you, there is no need for The Quilted Bee. I am forever grateful for your support. Thank you for joining us on our journey.
